What Are The Most Dangerous Roads in Gloucester County?

I-295 and the NJ Turnpike are two major interstates running through Gloucester County, and naturally they see a high number of traffic accidents every year. However, there are other roads that run through Gloucester County that also see a surprisingly high frequency of traffic accidents and fatalities yearly.

  • Route 40, Franklin Township: The stretch of Route 40 that runs through Franklin Township has seen multiple fatalities, and in 2013 was one of three roads that tied for the #1 ranking on the Tri-State Transportation Campaign’s list of the most dangerous roads for pedestrians, after 9 pedestrians were killed in just two years.
  • Black Horse Pike (Route 322 or Route 42 in parts): Both motorists and pedestrians have lost their lives on Black Horse Pike, with 3 fatalities in 2020 so far.
  • Route 55: The 21 mile stretch of Route 55 that runs through Gloucester County has seen 13 deaths in three years, with 3 fatalities so far in 2020.
  • Route 130: Route 130 is the most dangerous highway in the state of NJ, with about 11 deaths per year. A .72 mile section near the 1-76 interchange had a crash rate of 13.89 with 157 crashes in a year.
  • Route 47: Route 47 has been one of the worst roads in 2020, with 5 fatalities, 2 of which were in Washington Township. Westville, Deptford, and Clayton Townships each also saw a fatality on Route 47 in 2020.

Gloucester County has a high number of traffic fatalities and accidents every year, at 10.5 deaths per 100,000 people, well above the state average of 6.7 deaths per 100,000. That puts it in the highest category of risk, “reason for concern”, in the state.

What Should I Do After a Car Accident in Gloucester County

The state of New Jersey requires that you report any accident that involves an injury, death, or more than $500 in damage within 10 days of the accident. This means your first step after an accident should be to call law enforcement and emergency services, so that you have all the documentation you will need.

It is also helpful to:

  • Make notes of details like weather or road conditions
  • Get contact information and detailed descriptions of the accident from witnesses
  • Take photos of both vehicles, any injuries, and the scene of the crash
  • Talk to a doctor immediately following the accident

While filing a report with the authorities immediately is the first step, you will have up to two years to file a claim under the statute of limitations in New Jersey.
